William V. VanHorn, 89, of Waukon, IA, died Tuesday, May 12, 2009, at Maple Crest Manor in Fayette, IA. Funeral services will be held Monday, May 18th, at 11:00 AM at Zalmona Presbyterian Church in rural Waukon, with Pastor Tom Buresh officiating. Burial will be at Zalmona Cemetery. Friends may call from 3:00 - 6:00 PM Sunday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.
William Victor VanHorn was born on February 16, 1920 in Au Gres, MI, the 13th of 15 children of Benjamin and Lynnville (Buffington) VanHorn. He married Delores Kruger on September 22, 1942 in Kahoka, MO. They farmed first near Rossville, IA, and later in Ludlow Township, west of Waukon. In 1971 Bill and Delores moved from the farm to Waukon where Bill was a custodian at East Elementary School. He also drove school bus for over 40 years for the Waukon School District. Bill enjoyed playing cards with his friends, fishing, woodworking and spending time with his grandchildren. The family would like to thank the staff at Makee Manor and Maple Crest Manor in Fayette for the wonderful care they provided Bill the last 6 years.
Survivors include two sons, Neal (Nancy) VanHorn of Wadena, IA and Kevin (Christine) VanHorn of Spillville, IA; two daughters, Cheryl (Bill) Moran of Waverly, TN and Karen (Joe) Herman of State Center, IA; a son in law, Gary Decker of Lawler, IA; and many grand and great-grandchildren. Bill is preceded in death by his wife Delores; his parents; a daughter, Bernice Decker, who died in March of 2009; a daughter in law Judy VanHorn; and all of his brothers and sisters.
Honorary casketbearers are Gary Decker, Jack VanHorn and Ron VanHorn. Casketbearers are Jeremy VanHorn, Ben VanHorn, Micah VanHorn, Chris Rigel, Brad Brown, Dean Nierling, Josh Howes and Zachary Rigel.
