William "Bill" John Mathis

William "Bill" J. Mathis, 83, of Waukon, IA, died Friday, November 22, 2013, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, MN. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, November 26th, at 11:00 AM at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon, with Fr. Jim Dubert officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Waukon. Friends may call from 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM Monday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon where there will be a 3:45 pm scripture service.

William John "Bill" Mathis was born May 23, 1930, in Lansing, IA, the son of Leo and Frieda (Wendler) Mathis. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Paint Rock. Bill graduated from the Waterville High School in 1948. On October 3, 1951, he married Helen Huffman at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon. Bill worked for Home Gas Company, owned and operated by Ralph Welch, before working for People's Natural Gas Company and retiring in 1993.

He was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church. Bill enjoyed fishing, especially at Jerry Johanningmeier's pond. He also enjoyed watching NASCAR, football, baseball, and basketball on television, and was an avid Chicago Cubs fan. Bill's favorite times were when he was with his grandchildren; he enjoyed playing games with them and pulling pranks on them.

Survivors include his wife Helen Mathis of Waukon; his children: Gary (Maria) Mathis of Johnson City, NY, Mark Mathis of Indiana, Greg Mathis of Cumming, GA, and Sue (John) Yager of Thompson, IA; 9 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two sisters: Jean (Cy) Corrigan of Decorah, IA, and Lorraine Bangs of Marshalltown, IA. He is preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Vincent Mathis.

Honorary casketbearers are Francis Berns, Jerry Johanningmeier, Rich Meyer, Cletus Sommer, Ralph Welch, and Bob Zwirlein. Casketbearers are Jr Honsey, Dave, Dru and Skylar Ohdahl, Ryan, Darcy and Richie Mathis, and Brandon Bengtson.
