Wilbur A. Rose, 79, of Waukon, IA, died Tuesday, June 30, 2009, at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Monday, July 6th, at 11:00 AM at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Waukon, with Rev. Richard Iles officiating. Burial with military graveside rites will be at Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Friends may call from 3:00 PM - 7:00 PM Sunday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.
Wilbur Arden "Bub" Rose was born on January 17, 1930 in Volney, IA, the son of George Hampton and Jennie Louise (Huffman) Rose. He was baptized at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Waukon and graduated from Waukon High School in 1947. Following school he went to work installing power lines and then as a carpenter for Dale Robey. Bub enlisted in the US Navy in 1950 (1950-1954) and served during the Korean War. He was an aviation mechanic airman and spent most of his tour in California. While serving in the Navy, he married Shirley Ann Zimmerman on September 27, 1952 in Reno, NV. Following his tour in the Navy, they returned to Waukon where Wilbur worked a short time as a carpenter again before beginning a 34 year career as a furniture salesman and floor covering installer at Martin Brothers Furniture Store as well as helping at Martin Funeral Home. In later years he worked as a clerk at Double D Liquor Store in Waukon and drove van for Northeast Iowa Transit.
Bub was an active community volunteer. He held various offices at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, was a member of the American Legion, the local Saddle Club, and served on the Allamakee County Fair Board. He was also a long-time member and former Chief of the Waukon Pioneer Fire Department. Wilbur had a life-long interest in sports. He was a good basketball player in school and remained a fan of the Waukon Indians, Iowa Hawkeyes, Chicago Cubs, and Green Bay Packers. He enjoyed the outdoors, fishing in many of the local area streams and deer hunting locally as well as trips to Wyoming and Montana. He also liked riding motorcycle, going on trail rides, playing pool, and camping with friends at Yellow River Forest. Bub had a great sense of humor, was a loyal friend to many, and often went out of his way to do whatever he could to help anyone. His favorite times were those he spent with his family, being with and following all the activities of his kids when they were young and later doing the same for his grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife Shirley of Waukon; three daughters, Cindy (Mike) Rose-Hammond of Belfair, WA, Lynn (Bruce) Anderson of Waterville, IA, and Carol (Sam) Rose-Quandahl of Winona, MN; six grandchildren, Dexter (Ashley), Samantha, Emily, and Abbey Quandahl, and Jennie and Ian Anderson; and one great-grandson, Landon Quandahl. He is preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Wayne; and a sister, Stacia Campbell.
Honorary casketbearers are members of the Waukon Pioneer Fire Department. Casketbearers are Dexter Quandahl, Ian Anderson, Bill and Robert Campbell, Ralph and Gordon Campbell, Dick Gearhart, and Jack Marsden.
