Wesley K. Rood, 79, of Waukon, IA, died Friday, February 7, 2014, at the Aase Haugen Home in Decorah, IA. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, February 12th, at 11:00 AM at St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon, with Rev. Lynn G. Groe officiating. Burial with military rites will be at Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Friends may call from 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM Tuesday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.

Wesley Kermit Rood was born April 7, 1934, in Waukon, IA, the son of Ove and Gena (Asleson) Rood. He was baptized at West Paint Creek Synod Lutheran Church in Waukon and confirmed at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Lansing, IA. Wes graduated from Waukon High School in 1952; he enlisted in the United States Army in 1954, and was honorably discharged in 1956. On July 1, 1956, he married Genevieve Adeline Winters at West Paint Creek Synod Lutheran Church. The couple made their home in several places in Eastern Iowa. Wes was an accountant and worked for: Wilson's in Cedar Rapids, Humphrey Dairy in West Union, Underdall's in Independence, and Pladsen's Auto Sales in Waukon. While in West Union, he also worked as a laborer for H&H and operated the Montgomery Ward store. Wes was a huge philatelist and started his own stamp collecting business, buying and selling stamps around the world.

Wes was a member of the American Legion and St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon. Besides collecting stamps, he also enjoyed collected coins. Wes liked to talk and read about history, mainly about the Roman Empire and American history. He and Genevieve liked to travel, and took trips to Las Vegas, Branson, Northern Minnesota, Canada, and also to Mississippi to check out the state's history and architecture. Wes also enjoyed playing cards at the senior center and at City Club in Waukon.

Wes is survived by his two children: Michael (Marilyn) Rood of Monona, IA, and Sandra Rood of Cedar Rapids; four grandchildren: Christopher (Sandra) Rood of Runnells, IA, Jacob (Mariah) Burkart of Ft. Riley, KS, Cory (Beth) Rood of Petersburg, IA, and Lindsey Schrader of Cedar Rapids; three great-grandchildren: Adalisa, Abriana, and Oliver Rood; and special friend Norma Bloxham of Waukon.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Genevieve in 1993; and great-grandson Alijah Rood.

Casketbearers are Mike A'Hearn, John Ashbacher, Dick & Roger Asleson, and Ron Winters.
