Wayne Mark Welch

August 14, 1932 — September 11, 2012

Wayne Mark Welch, 80, of Waukon, IA, (formerly of Falls Church, VA), passed away Tuesday, September 11, 2012, at Northgate Care Center in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Thursday, September 13th at 11:00 am at St. Mary's Lycurgus Catholic Church in rural Waukon. Burial with military graveside rites will be in the church cemetery. Friends may greet the family from 10:00 am until the time of service at the church on Thursday.


Wayne was born on August 14, 1932 in rural Lansing, IA, to Leo T. and Anna C. (Laughlin) Welch. He attended a one-room country school, graduated from St. Patrick's High School, Waukon; Loras College, Dubuque, and completed a fellowship at Columbia University in advanced science writing. As a freshman in high school (age 13) he won the Allamakee County section of the statewide Iowa essay contest and as a senior wrote the winning essay in Iowa Development in Allamakee County. Wayne served in the U.S. Army in Germany as writer for their publication, "Port Reporter." He had the opportunity to interview Chuck Yeager and visited with several astronauts. He was an editor/writer for newspapers and institutional magazines specializing in science/medical/education issues.


Wayne, a passionate fan of baseball, was published four years for his "Fantasy Baseball" book, rating all the players in both baseball leagues. He was a marathon runner skilled enough to gain entry to run both the Boston (four times) and New York City marathons.

Surviving are a brother, Denis (Marlene) Welch, Lansing and sisters Donna Lea Ritter, La Crosse, WI; Anita Welch, Bloomington, MN; Elaine (Jack) Kaufman, Sun City, AZ; and Sister Leanne Welch, PBVM, Dubuque, IA. He was preceded in death by his parents.

The family would like to thank Northgate Care Center for their kind and thoughtful care of Wayne during his long-term illness.
Memorials may be sent to Waukon Park and Recreation (designated for Little League softball/baseball) or to the donor's choice.

Casketbearers were Ed Welch, Jim Welch, Harold Welch, Dennis Troendle and Mark Ritter.
