Virginia Mae Mccormick

Virginia M. McCormick, 83, of Waterville, IA, died Friday, October 31, 2008, at the Good Samaritan Center in Waukon, IA. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, November 4th, at 10:30 AM at St. Ann's - St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Harpers Ferry, IA, with Fr. Louis Trzil and Rev. Msgr. Ed Lechtenberg officiating. Burial will be held in St. Joseph's Paint Rock Cemetery, Harpers Ferry. Friends may call from 4:00 - 8:00 PM Monday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon where there will be a 4:00 pm scripture service, and from 9:30 am until time of services on Tuesday at the church.


Virginia Mae McCormick was born on March 9, 1925 in rural Waukon, IA, the daughter of Leo and Edna (Reddy) Howe. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John the Baptist at West Ridge Catholic Church in rural Waukon. Virginia attended school in Waukon and Waterville. On October 27, 1942 she married Leo James McCormick at St. Joseph's Paint Rock Catholic Church in rural Harpers Ferry. Virginia and Leo farmed in Paint Creek Township. They raised dairy cows, hogs and grain. When Leo and his sons were in the field, Virginia would always prepare a hot meal and take it out to them. She also worked as a cook at the Harbor House in Harpers Ferry and at the Riv Aire in Lansing, IA.


Virginia was a member of St. Ann's-St. Joseph's Catholic Church where she was active in the Rosary Socitey and ACCW. She was also a member of the Farm Bureau. Virginia was a 4H leader for the Toppers Club and would help with the local elections in Waterville. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends, cooking, baking, sewing and traveling to the Western States. Virginia would always be there to help others when they needed help.

Survivors include her children, Karen (Roger) Melcher of Harpers Ferry, Ken (Janice) and
Kent (Joan) McCormick both of Waterville; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Leo who died in 2007; a sister, LaVern Howe and a brother, Kenneth Howe.


Casketbearers are Marty, Jeff, Tom and Brian Melcher, Jacqui Melcher Van Minsel, Shannon McCormick Stone, Dustin, Colby, Ian, Keith, Michael and Jacob McCormick.
