Vernon L. Blietz, 91, of Lansing, IA, died Monday, October 21, 2013, at Thornton Manor in Lansing. Graveside services with military honors will be held Monday, November 11th, at 2:00 PM at New Hampton City Cemetery in New Hampton, IA, with Pastor Kevin Frey officiating. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon, IA, is handling the arrangements.
Vernon Louis Blietz was born October 12, 1922, near Marcus, IA, the son of Albert and Lenora (Frese) Blietz. In 1927, the Blietz family moved to a farm 13 miles northwest of New Hampton, IA. He attended the rural and city schools of Chickasaw County. Vernon began working for the K.R. Brown Engineering Firm doing the planning for the Rural Electric Co-op, which gave the first electric power to the farms in Iowa. On February 5, 1943, during WWII, Vernon entered the United States Army and was assigned to the 312th Medical Bn. of the 87th Infantry Division in the ETO. He was discharged in January of 1946. Vernon moved to the Cedar Rapids-Marion, IA area and was a volunteer fireman for nine years. He became a professional fireman and worked through the ranks to become the Chief of the Marion Fire Department. In October of 1977, Vernon retired and moved to Allamakee County, IA. On February 13, 1970, Vernon married Doris Smith in Miami, FL. They lived on an acreage east of Waukon, IA, and eventually moved to Lansing, IA, where he was spent two partial terms on the city council and one term as mayor.
Vernon was a lifetime member of the Marion Masonic Lodge #548, as well as a lifetime member of the American Legion. He also belonged to the Lansing VFW, El Kahir Shrine, Iowa Firemen's Association, Iowa Fire Chiefs' Association, Linn County Firemen's Association, Midwest Benefits Firemen's Association, Marion Lions Club, and the Cedar Rapids Traveling Men's Club. Vernon enjoyed fishing, golf, playing cards, civic affairs, and politics.
Vernon is survived by his wife Doris of Lansing; sister Joyce Laures of New Hampton; four brothers: Kenneth (Sandi) Blietz of Ventura, IA, LaVern (JoAn) Blietz of Edina, MN, Raymond (Helen) Blietz of Spain, and Jim (Connie) Blietz of Council Bluffs, IA; sister-in-law Virginia Blietz Kotz of Marshalltown, IA; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Lyle and Glen Blietz; sister Viola Blietz; and brother-in-law John Laures.
