Vernis Charles Haberichter

Vernis C. Haberichter, 89, of Waukon, IA, died Saturday, October 2, 2020, at Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah, IA. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 7th, at 11:00 AM at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon with Fr. John Moser, Fr. Mark Osterhaus, Rev. Msgr. Ed Lechtenberg, and Fr. Bernard Grady officiating. Burial with military honors will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Waukon. Friends may call from 9:30 AM until time of services on Wednesday at the church. Vernis Charles Haberichter was born October 8, 1930, in Monona, IA the son of Vern and Nora (Lenth) Haberichter. He graduated from Monona High School. Vernis joined the US Army in 1952, serving for two years as a company clerk. He served some time overseas in Mannheim, Germany and was discharged in 1954. Following his discharge, he moved back to the Waukon area and worked at the Volney Cheese Factory and Waukon Creamery. On June 1, 1957, he married Helen Jane Egan at St. Pius at Cherry Mound Catholic Church in rural Harpers Ferry, IA. Vernis farmed with the Baxters and owned and operated the Skelly Station with his brother-in-law Harold Valley for three years. In 1966, he started working for the US Postal Service, retiring in 1991. He then worked for the Votsmier family at Town and Country True Value Hardware and Allamakee Solid Waste and Recycling.

Vernis was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, where he served as a greeter, usher, and Eucharistic Minister. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus and NARFE. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, visiting with people, playing cards at church, and traveling to Branson, MO, and the East Coast. Vernis and his family also took some family vacations to Florida and South Carolina. He was very devoted to his wife Helen.

Survivors include his children: Richard Haberichter of West Des Moines, IA, and Sheri (Dean) Rowe of Fredericksburg, IA; a daughter-in-law Nancy Haberichter of Waukon; six grandchildren: Reggie (Beth) Rowe, Elizabeth (Marty) Kass, Kelly (Stephen) Lines, Stephanie (Kevin) Eslick, Jarod (Molly) Haberichter, and Jonathan (Emily) Haberichter; 11 great-grandchildren; a brother Clarence (Judy) Haberichter of Volney; a sister-in-law Rose Ella Valley of Waukon; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife Helen, who died in 2015; a son Thomas, who died in 2014; one infant grandson Shawn Haberichter; a sister in infancy; and a brother Harold Haberichter.

Honorary casketbearers are Stephanie Eslick, Emily and Molly Haberichter, Elizabeth Kass, Kelly Lines, Beth Rowe, and Vernis' great-grandchildren. Casketbearers are Reggie Rowe, Jarod and Jonathan Haberichter, Kevin Eslick, Stephen Lines, and Marty Kass.
