Vera M. Burroughs, 88, of Waukon, IA, died Tuesday, December 9, 2014, at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Monday, December 15th, at 11:00 AM at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon, with Fr. Jim Dubert and Deacon Mike Ward officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Waukon. Friends may call from 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM Sunday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon, where there will be a 1:45 PM scripture service.
Vera Mabel Burroughs was born May 21, 1926, in Waterloo, IA, the daughter of Henry and Edna (Trewin) Wasserfort. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Dorchester, IA, and raised on her parents' farm in the Denver, IA, area. After graduating high school, Vera lived and worked in the Waterloo, IA, area for a few years. On November 7, 1953, she married Roland "Sonny" Burroughs at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Dorchester. The couple lived in Dorchester for a while before moving to Waukon, IA. Vera was a busy homemaker, raising four children.
She was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon and also belonged to the St. Jude's Study Club. Vera volunteered at St. Patrick School, helping kids with their reading skills. She also collected hand bells.
Vera is survived by her husband Sonny of Waukon; her four children: Becky of Boston, MA, Paul of Waukon, Mark of Wichita Falls, TX, and Dean of Waukon; 15 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her five siblings.
