Thomas Michael Schofield was born July 15, 1941, in Waukon, IA, the son of Michael and Cecilia (Sweeney) Schofield. As a child, Tom and his family lived in Monona, IA, where he was baptized and confirmed at St. Patrick Catholic Church and graduated from MFL High School in 1959. Tom married Joyce Olson in 1962 at St. Patrick in Monona. They had three daughters together and later divorced. On July 26, 1986, Tom married Mary Jo Campbell at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They resided in New Albin, IA.
Tom worked several part and full-time jobs in the Monona area and in 1970, started with the US Postal Service. During the next 12 ½ years he worked for the Monona Post Office; at times during this period he also served as Distribution Clerk, Postmaster Replacement, and Officer in Charge in offices such as Ridgeway, Decorah, and Luana. In June 1983, he began serving as Postmaster in St. Olaf, IA. During these years, Tom served on the St. Olaf City Council and volunteered for the St. Olaf Fire Department, Red Cross, and American Heart Association. Tom was also a member of NAPUS/Postmaster Association, St. Patrick Church in Monona, and a former member of the MFL Booster Club. In 1986, he became Postmaster in New Albin, IA, where he spent the last 19 years of his 35-year career, retiring in 2004. He was a very active member of St. Joseph's Church, where he formerly served on the Church Council and as a part time Groundskeeper, Usher, Gift Carrier, and Offertory Accountant. Tom was very active in the community and a past City Council member. Even after retirement, you could find Tom helping his sons in-law on their farms. A week before his death, he helped with the corn harvest on one of his son in-law's farms.
Tom loved classic cars, especially his 1972 Olds convertible. When he lived in Monona, he had a passion for Corvairs. He recently acquired an old Buick, "Rocky". He enjoyed exploring just about every gravel road in the area in Rocky. Tom truly enjoyed long drives, tinkering with just about anything, especially his cars, and was an active member of the Allamakee Antique Auto Club. Every car he ever owned shined like a brand-new penny and sometimes he would shine up other peoples' cars for them as well.
Tom was always there to lend a helping hand to family and friends. His children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were truly the loves of his life. He really enjoyed dancing, listening to old time country music, watching Mollie B perform, and working in his yard. For 15 years, he and Mary owned a camper at Lonning's Landing along the Upper Iowa River in Dorchester. As a true perfectionist, Tom was a jack-of-all-trades and a master-of-most, except plumbing and electrical work.
Tom is survived by his wife Mary of New Albin; children: Kimberly (Lindsey) Krambeer of Farmersburg, IA, Vicki (Phil) Hoffmann of Waukon, IA, Masie (Chris) McGraw of Faribault, MN, and Angela (Clayton) Hayes of Odessa, WA; grandchildren: Lucas Krambeer, Kenna (Alex) Hamilton, Paige (Aaron) Ornelas, Tyler and Corey Hoffmann, and Angel, Annika, Bruce, and Ceianne Mankel; great-grandchildren: Lyvea Krambeer, Annabelle and Harper Hamilton, and Kinsley Ornelas; his siblings: Larry (Sheri) Schofield of Elko, MN, and Deb (Bruce) Kubitz of Waukon, IA; brother-in-law Darrell Rogness of Waukon, IA; and many nieces and nephews.
