Thomas D. Stone, 81, of Waukon, IA, died Monday, October 13, 2008, at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon, IA. Funeral services will be held Friday, October 17th, at 11:00 AM at St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon, with Rev. Lynn G. Groe officiating. Burial with military graveside rites will be held in Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Friends may call from 4:00 - 8:00 PM Thursday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.
Thomas Delbert Stone was born on February 25, 1927 in Waukon, IA, the son of Herschel and Julia (Williams) Stone. He was baptized at First Presbyterian Church in Waukon and attended Waukon Schools. On October 13, 1945 he married Alice Iverna Steffenson at the St. John's Parsonage in Waukon. Tom served in the US Navy from 1944 to 1947. After the service he returned to Waukon where he received his GED. Tom worked for Loven's Service Garage, DeBuhr Plumbing and Heating and the Waukon Lumber Company. In 1962 he went to work for the Waukon Police Department where served as Police Chief from 1970 to 1981. Tom was mayor of Waukon from 1982 to 1986. Following Alice's death in 1987, he married Ethel Arlene Ehde Knickerbocker on September 16, 1989 at St. John's Lutheran Church. Tom and Ethel cleaned the Waukon City Hall together for many years. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and the VFW. Tom enjoyed fishing, hunting and spending time with his family and friends.
Survivors include his children, Mary Stone, Darrell (Jean) Stone and Wayne (Nona) Stone all of Waukon, IA, Katie Giese of Alma Center, WI, Rita (Steve) Kunkle of West Union, IA, Linda Gerleman of Sumner, IA, Lori Becker of New Hampton, IA, and Tim (Wendy) Stone of Waukon, IA; 28 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters, Rita Murphy of Clinton, IA and Georgia Glaus of Cedar Rapids, IA. He is preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Alice; his second wife, Ethel who died in 2007; 4 brothers, Neil, Kenneth, William and Donald Stone; 4 sisters, Judy Stone, Marjorie LeBlanc, Etta Dawson and Jean Edmondson and a step-grandson, Jason Kunkle.
Casketbearers are Jeremy, Darby and Brandon Stone, Billy Noecker, Travis Giese, Justin Gerleman and Tyler Becker.
