Sylvia C. Bakke, 81, of Waukon, IA, died Sunday, August 10, 2008, at the Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Friday, August 15th, at 11:00 am at Old West Paint Creek Lutheran Church in rural Waukon, with Pastor Ken Kimball officiating. Burial will be held in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 3:00 - 8:00 PM Thursday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.

Sylvia Christina Bakke was born on January 5, 1927 in LaCrosse, WI, the daughter of William and Christina (Schellhammer) Zimmerman. Sylvia's parents died when she was very young. She was raised by her aunt and uncle, Lizzie and Charles Rissman. She was baptized and confirmed at the Churchtown Presbyterian Church and attended Lycurgus Country School before graduating from Waukon High School in 1944. Sylvia worked in Washington DC in the Children's Hospital for two years, before moving back to Waukon where she worked in the Allamakee County Auditor's office. On April 8, 1948 she married Charles Bakke in Lansing, IA. They farmed together for many years in Center Township rural Waukon. She also worked for the Allamakee County School District as a cook. Sylvia and Charles moved to Waukon in 1989.

She was a long time member of Old West Paint Creek Lutheran Church where she was active in its ladies' circles. Sylvia enjoyed fishing, coffee with her friends, playing euchre and spending time with her family. She was an avid Chicago Cubs fan.

Survivors include her husband, Charles of Waukon; her children, Pat (Grant) Hagen of Marion, IA, Dean (Shelley) Bakke of Cedar Rapids, IA, Todd (Kristina) Bakke of Gardena, CA and Steve Bakke of Waukon; 3 grandchildren, Adam and his wife Rey, Alyssa and Noah Bakke; a half-sister, Shirley (Wilbur) Rose of Waukon; 2 step-sisters, Arlene Rooney of Waukon and Sylvia Hayes of Sun City, AZ; 3 sisters-in-law, Hazel Rissman and Sally Zimmerman both of Waukon, and Marie Zimmerman of Lansing. She is preceded in death by her parents; her adopted parents, Lizzie and Charles Rissman; a daughter, Linda; a son, Duane; 2 brothers, Herbert and Walter Zimmerman; a sister, Esther Humphries; a step-brother, Milton Wild; 2 step-sisters, Betty Wild and Eleanor Mau; and an adopted brother, Harvey Rissman.

Casketbearers are Richard Hansmeier, Donald Bakke, Dave Zimmerman, Gordon Gilbertson, Allan Rissman and John Bakke.
