Sylvan J. Ashbacher, 77, of Lansing, IA died Tuesday, October 2, 2007 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon, IA. Funeral services will be held Friday, October 5th at 1:00 pm at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon, with Rev. Richard N. Eick officiating. Burial with military graveside rites will be held in French Creek Cemetery, rural Lansing. Friends may call from 4:00 to 8:00 pm Thursday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon. Memorials may be directed to Zion United Church of Christ.
Sylvan John Ashbacher was born on October 19, 1929 in Waukon, IA, the son of Urban and Gertrude (Dawson) Ashbacher. He was baptized and confirmed at French Creek Methodist Church and attended English Bench Country School, both in rural Lansing. Sylvan served in the US Army from 1953 until 1956 in Germany and Alaska as a paratrooper for the 101st Airborne Division Screaming Eagles. On December 24, 1956 he married Betty Arlene Massie in Jeffersonville, IN. Betty died in 1998. Sylvan farmed in French Creek Township, rural Lansing, where he took great pride in raising his beef cows and crops. He also planted and sold Christmas trees throughout the years. On October 6th, 2000 he married Judy Solberg Diersen at Zion United Church of Christ.
Sylvan was a former member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church and currently was a member of Zion United Church of Christ where he sang in the choir. He was a life member of the American Legion Post 50 in Lansing and a member of the Farm Bureau. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, especially his grandchildren, and in his later years watching sports on television.
Survivors include his wife, Judy Ashbacher of Lansing; his children, Cherie' Miller of Huntsville, AL, Kevin (Gina) Ashbacher of Lansing, Janet (Jeff) Jannsen of Waukon, Brenda (Loren) Plozel of Monona, IA, and Kelly (John) McCauley of Dallas, GA; 11 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; a step-son, Anthony Diersen of Lansing; and a sister, Lorrayne (Mark) Markum of Mountain View, CA. He is preceded in death by his parents; his first wife Betty; and a brother, Dawson Ashbacher.
Honorary casketbearers are Jill Wacker, Jennifer Hennessy, Shannon Miller, Katie Plozel, and Courtney and Samantha Holland. Casketbearers are Kevin, Joel and Brandan Ashbacher, Jacob Jannsen, Nick Miller and Jason Plozel.
