Friends may call from 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM Thursday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.
Stanley LeRoy Palmer was born on April 16, 1926 in Aberdeen, South Dakota, the son of Everett and Laura (Flage) Palmer. He grew up in Waterville, Iowa, where he attended school. When he was just 17 years old, he enlisted in the US Navy, where he served as a Seaman First Class on the USS Thetis Bay in the South Pacific Theater. He was a gunner on a bomber during WWII. Stan was shot down over the South Pacific, but he and two other crew members were able to bail out and seek shelter on a Japanese occupied island, where they hid for several days until they could be rescued.
On November 7, 1946, he married "the love of his life", Delora "Dodie" Williams and they enjoyed nearly 60 years together until her death in 2006. As a young couple, they farmed in Waterville until 1952 when they moved to Dubuque and Stan began working at John Deere. He retired in 1983 and they moved to Harpers Ferry in 1993. Stan resided at South Crest Assisted Living Facility in Waukon for two years before moving to Thornton Manor in Lansing in January of 2013.
Throughout the years, Stan loved to fish, hunt, golf, dance, read, do woodworking projects, and socialize with family and friends. He always said there were no strangers, just friends he hadn't met. He was known for his outgoing personality, witty remarks, and never-failing sense of humor. Stan felt honored to be a passenger on Honor Flight 11 out of La Crosse, Wisconsin and grateful that his son-in-law, who he called his "best friend", was his chaperone. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren were always a special joy and source of pride for him.
Survivors include a daughter, Jeanene (Fred) Delphey of Waukon; a grandson, Adam (Erika) Delphey of Decorah; a granddaughter, Brianna (Luke Mastny) Delphey of San Francisco, CA; two great-granddaughters, Kathleen and Kendall; a brother, Allan (Pat) Palmer of Volney, IA; and two sisters, Joan (Richard) Leiran of Waukon and Judy (Charles) Hastert of Green Bay, WI. He is preceded in death by his wife, Dodie; his parents; and two brothers, Curtis and Neal Palmer.
Stan, a member of Harpers Ferry American Legion Scenic Post 722, will be escorted to his final resting place at IOOF Cemetery in Rossville, Iowa by the Patriot Guard where he will be buried with military honors. Casketbearers are Gary Johnson, Kevin Shedenhelm, and Kenneth, Robert, David, and Stephen Palmer.
