Shirley Elane Weymiller was born August 26, 1928, in New Albin, IA, the daughter of Earl H. and Alice (Child) Reiser. She was baptized and confirmed at Grace United Methodist Church in New Albin, where she was a lifelong member, and attended New Albin schools. On August 8, 1947, Shirley married Robert "Bob" J. Weymiller, Jr at her parents' home. They farmed on Bob's home farm with Shirley milking cows and raising kids. For a few years, Shirley also worked at the Waukon hospital switchboard. She sewed most of her family's clothes, canned produce from her garden, and was a great cook and baker. Everything she made became a family favorite and Shirley took great pride in particular in baking raised doughnuts and bread.
A renowned social butterfly, Shirley belonged to several card clubs, at times playing five days a week, and gossiped with her coffee "clutch". At church, she was active in the ladies' circle and on the council; Shirley also attended services at Mt. Hope Presbyterian Church, was a lifelong member of the New Albin Ladies Auxiliary 5603, and rode horses with the Upper Iowa Saddle Club. Shirley and her friend Esther Dee loved taking country drives and just galivanting around. She also enjoyed watching the birds and checking out the sunflowers.
