Shirley Elaine Steele was born on May 16, 1939 in rural Waukon, IA, the daughter of Glenn "Pops" and Fern (Vickery) Roffman. She was baptized and confirmed at the Glenwood Lutheran Church in rural Decorah and attended several rural schools in the Ferris Mills area. On August 21, 1960 she married Curtis Steele at the Glenwood Lutheran Church. They lived in Decorah for a short time before moving to Waukon where she remained the rest of her life.
A severe case of rheumatoid arthritis when she was young limited some of Shirley's physical activity, but not her spirit. She stayed very active by being an avid reader, keeping up on world news, and working crossword puzzles. Some of her favorite times were spent attending her great nephews' activities and ballgames.
Survivors include her husband, Curtis, and her mother, Fern Roffman, both of Waukon; a brother, Donald Roffman of Welton, IA; 2 sisters, Linda (Steve) Henning of Decorah and Sandra (John) Byrnes of Waukon; a sister-in-law, Catherine Roffman of Moline, IL; and several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her father, Glenn "Pops" Roffman; a brother, Lyle Roffman; a sister-in-law, Vicki Roffman; and a nephew, Randy Roffman.
Casketbearers are Richard Bollman, David Bollman, Ron Roffman, Chad Steiber, Scot Knudtson and Kirk Vorwald.
