Sharon J. Wood, 70, of Waterville, IA, died Monday, January 11, 2010, at Thornton Manor in Lansing, IA. Funeral services will be held Friday, January 15th, at 11:00 AM at Waterville Lutheran Church, with Rev. Kris Snyder officiating. Burial will be held in the church cemetery both in Waterville. Friends may call from 4:00 - 8:00 PM Thursday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.
Sharon Jean Eddy Wood was born in Lewis, IA, on July 22, 1939. She was raised and later adopted by Casper and Inez (Hanson) Haugen. Sharon was confirmed at Old East Paint Creek Lutheran Church in rural Waterville, IA. She attended Waterville Elementary School and graduated from Waterville High School in 1957. On December 1, 1957 she married George Eugene Wood at Old East Paint Creek Lutheran Church. They started by farming halves with Lester "Bill" Thomson near Elon for a few years. In 1962 they purchased a farm in Paint Creek Township near Waterville where they began raising crops, hogs and beef cattle as well as operating a dairy herd. Their daughter Sheryl and her husband Steve joined the operation in 1989. Sharon served as an election judge for Allamakee County for many years and served on the tax review board.
Sharon was a member of Waterville Lutheran Church and was very active in its ladies circles where she served as president. She was also active as a Sunday school and confirmation teacher and was a Lutheran League leader. Sharon was a volunteer EMT for the Waterville Rescue Squad. She was a member of the Browning Club, Allamakee Snowblazers and Allamakee Sportsman Club. Sharon was an excellent seamstress making several wedding dresses, prom dresses and drapes for her family and friends. She also enjoyed cooking, reading and spending time on the houseboats she and George kept in Lansing.
Survivors include 4 daughters, Donna Jean Wood, Sheryl (Steve) Evanson and Sandra (Sean) Bresnahan all of Waterville and Carolyn (Jon) Halling of Eagan, MN; a nephew she raised as a son, Duane (Eileen) Wood of Waukon; 15 grandchildren; 3 brothers, Jerry (Norma) Eddy of Jacksonville, IL, Robert Liggrest of Phoenix, AZ and David Crumbley of California; and 4 sisters, Gloria (Beauford) Chapman of Austin, MN, Suzanne (Dean) Stokas of Kingman, AZ, Marilyn Marcellus of Texas and Louise Perry of Marion, IA. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George who died in 2006; 2 brothers, Arnold and John Eddy; and 3 sisters, Deloris Dry, Helen Clem and Phyllis Kvamme.
Honorary casketbearers are Jim and Natalie Baugher, Stewart Groves, George and Jean Huffey, Maurice and Kay Mooney, Martin and Joanne Odneal, Lloyd and Ruby Olson, Dick and Donna Reed, Paul and Diane Sorenson and Steve and Maureen Thode.
