Sharon L. Topel, 68, of Waukon, IA, died Thursday, December 2, 2010, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, MN. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 8th, at 11:00 AM at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Waukon, with Rev. Richard Iles officiating. Burial will be held in Sixteen Cemetery in rural Monona, IA. Friends may call from 4:00 to 7:00 PM Tuesday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon. Memorials may be made to the Cancer Society.
Sharon Louise Topel was born January 14, 1942 in Detroit, MI, the daughter of Richard and Louise (Winnen) Finkbeiner. She graduated from Osborne High School in Detroit, MI, in 1961. On April 3, 1965 she married Wayne Topel at Messiah Methodist Church by the Rev. Bert Hoskins in Detroit, MI. They lived in Detroit until 1976 when they moved to Waukon. Sharon was a waitress, cashier and elevator operator. She also worked at Veteran's Memorial Hospital and at Northgate Care Center as a cook.
Sharon was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church where she was active in its ladies groups. She enjoyed ceramics, camping, gardening, bowling, sewing, cooking and listening to praise music. Sharon played the tambourine in two bands the Genesis 1 and Shalom.
Survivors include her husband, Wayne of Waukon; her children, Lisa (Paul) Mezera of New Albin, IA, Janet (Bruce) Larsen of Lansing, IA and Kenny (Kris) Topel of Ossian, IA; 10 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; a brother, Murray (Joann) Finkbeiner of Macomb, MI; and 2 nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents; and a sister, Beverly Finkbeiner.
Casketbearers are Roger Bechtel, Wilburt, Alfred and Donald Topel, Richard Dage and Doug O'Connell.
