Serenus "Sy" P. Platten, 70, of Harpers Ferry, IA, formerly of Cedar Rapids, IA, died unexpectedly doing what he loved on Monday, October 14, 2013, in rural Harpers Ferry. Memorial services will be held Thursday, October 24th, at 1:00 PM at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon, IA, with Pastor John Seitz officiating. Friends may call from 12:00 PM until the time of service on Thursday at the funeral home.
Serenus Peter Platten was born October 9, 1943, in Guttenberg, IA, the son of Peter and Julitta (Harter) Platten. Sy worked for Midland Forge in Cedar Rapids, IA, for 30 years before retiring. He loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman. Sy also enjoyed bowling and woodworking.
Survivors include two daughters: Brenda (Doug) Slagle of Marion, IA, and Lisa (Mark) Baskfield of Chaska, MN; five grandchildren: Joshua and Caleb Slagle, Olivia, Thomas and Julia Baskfield; one brother: Herbert (Karen) Platten; three sisters: Anna (Louis) Burkle, Bernadette (Ben) Jones, and Ramona (Bill) Jones. He is preceded in death by his parents; an infant son: Jeffrey Platten; two brothers: Jerome and Cyril Platten.
