Sally J. Zimmerman, 80, of Waukon, IA, died Wednesday, January 1, 2014, at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 4th, at 11:00 AM at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon, with Pastor Samantha Houser officiating. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Friends may call from 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM Friday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.
Sally Jane Zimmerman was born on August 31, 1933, on the Burr Oak, IA, farm of her parents, Clyde and Zeralda (Dahl) Sharp. She attended rural country schools in the Decorah, IA, area and graduated from Decorah High School in 1952. On June 15, 1952, she married Walter Frederick Zimmerman at the Methodist Church in Decorah. Sally was later baptized at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon. Her greatest joy was working with her husband of "nearly 50 years" with his career and raising their four sons.
Sally was a member of Zion United Church of Christ where she was very active in its ladies circles. She was a volunteer at the Good Samaritan Center where she also served on the advisory board for several years. Sally was also a member of the Red Hat Society and was very active with Trees Forever. She enjoyed playing cards, going to the boat, shopping, cooking, baking, especially bread, and boating on the Mississippi River. Her favorite times were spending time with her family and friends.
Survivors include her four sons: David (Jeannine) of Waukon, IA, Brian (Julie) of Hiawatha, IA, Gary (Susan) of Niwot, CO, and Todd (Teresa) of Naples, FL; 9 grandchildren: John (Jessica) Zimmerman and their children Mason and Carson, Kristina (Ben) Gralund and their children Hannah and Addison, Kelsey (Matt) Slay and their children Jillian and Sawyer; Maria (Bret) Paulsen and their children Garrett and Chase, Kyle (Laura) Zimmerman, William and Ingrid Zimmerman, and Jamie and Joe Zimmerman; 3 sisters-in-law: Shirley Rose and Arlene Rooney, both of Waukon, and Sylvia Hayes of Arizona; and a brother-in-law Charlie Bakke of Waukon. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband Walter who died in 1998; four sisters: Andrey Rognlien, Gloria Carter, Jean Harvey, and Nancy Griffin.
Honorary casketbearers are her granddaughters and granddaughters-in-law. Casketbearers are her grandsons and grandsons-in-law.
