Ruth Loree Quandahl was born September 25, 1931, in Postville, IA, the daughter of Earl Fredrick and Marion Amber (Stock) Miller. She grew up in the Postville area and eventually moved to Waukon, IA. Ruth graduated from Waukon High School and then attended Luther College in Decorah, IA. On June 25, 1950, she married Richard Dale Quandahl at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon. The couple owned and operated several businesses in Waukon. From 1950 to 1953, they sold Surge milking machines, which were some of the first sold in northeast Iowa. Then from 1954 to 1968, the couple owned Quandahl Hardware, which also brought the area people their first appliances. In the late 1960s, Ruth and Richard also partnered with Francis Martin in Quandahl-Martin Ford dealership. In 1960, they moved to their farm in rural Waukon, where Ruth was currently still very dedicated to farming. She was awarded the Allamakee County Pioneer Dairyman of 2009.
Ruth was a member at Forest Mills Methodist Church in rural Postville and St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Waukon. She was also instrumental in starting several Bible study groups in the area. Ruth loved horses; she organized local horse shows for many years and belonged to the Upper Iowa Saddle Club. She also loved dogs, especially Yorkies. Ruth was active in 4-H, and really enjoyed watching her grandchildren show their animals at the county fairs. Ruth also liked to sing, and sang at weddings when she was younger.
