Rosella Nierling

April 18, 1920 — January 30, 2008

Rosella Nierling, 87, of Cedar Rapids, IA, died Wednesday morning, January 30, 2008 at Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids. Services will be Monday at 11:00 am at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Waukon with Fr. Joseph Schneider and Fr. Gene Kutsch officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Waukon. Friends may call from 2:00 to 6:00 pm Sunday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon, where there will be a 2:00 pm scripture service and a 4:30 pm rosary.


Rosella is survived by 4 children, Judy (Tom) Rowles, Oxford, IA, Donald Nierling, Chicago, IL, Janice Nierling and Perry Paltz, Houston, TX, and Danny (Patty) Nierling, Waterloo, IA; 3 step-grandchildren, Courtney, Cole and Carly Collis; and a sister, Marcella (Milbourn) Johnson of Waukon.


She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur; her parents, Michael and Julia (Duffy) Mellick; 6 sisters, Mary Ryan, Margaret Howes, Rita Nierling, Pearl Weber, Loretta Collins and Regina Mahoney; and 4 brothers, Frank, Donald, Leonard and Leo Mellick.


Rosella was born April 18, 1920 near West Ridge, Allamakee County, Iowa. She had lived in Cedar Rapids since moving from Burr Oak, Iowa in 1952. Rosella married Arthur W. Nierling on April 15, 1942 at Saint John the Baptist Catholic Church, West Ridge. He died May 25th, 1963. Rosella worked as a baby sitter for the Tony and Laurie Schubert family for 14 years. She was a member of Saint Wenceslaus Catholic Church and a former member of Saint Ludmila Catholic Church. She was a member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary, Hanford Unit of the American Legion Auxiliary, Fraternal Order of the Eagles Auxiliary and Guardians of Saint Joseph Branch W137 F.C.S.L.A. (formerly Catholic Workman).

Casketbearers are Maynard Johnson, John Mahoney, Michael Mahoney, Leonard Mellick, Jerry Nierling and Dale Ryan.


A memorial fund has been established in Rosella's name.
