Roger Wayne Hesse was born on March 6, 1928 on the Winneshiek County, IA, farm of his parents, Paul and Clara (Snitker) Hesse. He was baptized and confirmed at Salem United Church of Christ and attended several rural Ludlow Township schools. For a short while after finishing school Roger worked as a hired man for several area farmers. On September 16, 1947 he married LaVonne Virginia Geving at St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon, IA. Roger and LaVonne spent their married life farming together in Ludlow and Union Prairie Township of Allamakee County, IA. At various times they operated a dairy herd and raised beef cattle, hogs, chickens, and grain. Roger loved farming and everything about living in the country. He was extremely handy around the farm and seemed to be able to fix anything in the way of machinery and equipment.

Roger was a life-long member of Salem United Church of Christ where he served on the Consistory for many years. He was also a board member for the Dairy Herd Improvement Association and a rural school board member. Roger enjoyed playing baseball and softball as well as bowling. He was an avid sports fan; particularly following the Chicago Cubs and Milwaukee Braves. Playing cards and spending time with his friends were other favorite pastimes. Family events were most important to Roger and he spent a lot of time following the sports and activities of his children when they lived at home and more recently the activities of his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife LaVonne of Waukon; his 5 children: Gary (Mary Ann) Hesse of Cedar Falls, IA, Holly Hesse of Springfield, MO, and Randy (Lori) Hesse, Wendy (Jody) Bucheit, and Perry (Marcia) Hesse, all of Waukon; 10 grandchildren: Jason Hesse, Shawn (James) Bobst, Heather Locus, Heath (Jill) Hesse, Heidi (Chris) Goetzinger, Sully and Sadie Bucheit, and Parker, Peyton and Pryce Hesse; 7 great-grandchildren: John Gogola, Jamie Bobst, Tyce and Teagan Locus, Alexis and Brock Hesse, and Sid Hesse; a sister Ruby Teslow of Decorah, IA; a brother Ronald (Shirley) Hesse of Waukon; and a sister-in-law Sandy Hesse of Waukon. He is preceded in death by his parents; his step-mother Mildred Hesse; a sister Marian and her husband Herbert Straate; a brother Orville Hesse; and a brother-in-law Nate Teslow.

Honorary casketbearers are Don and Dawn Blocker, Phil and Vicki Hoffmann, Mike and Linda Ferring, Don and Rachel Drenth, Cletus and Karen Mathis, and Dan and Kathy Mathis. Roger's grandsons served as casketbearers.
