Robert W. Opfer, 65, of Waukon, IA, died suddenly Thursday, August 19, 2010, while he was working in Fort Dodge, IA. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 25th, at 10:30 AM at Zalmona Presbyterian Church in Waukon, with Pastor Tom Buresh officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 4:00 PM - 8:00 PM Tuesday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.

Robert Wayne Opfer was born on November 23, 1944 in Waukon, IA the son of Edward and Marcella (Moen) Opfer. He was baptized and confirmed at Zalmona Presbyterian Church, attended Ludlow #5 rural school and graduated from Waukon High School in 1962. Bob served in the Army Reserves and farmed in Ludlow Township with his father. He also worked for IPLA as a hog buyer. On April 14, 1979 he married Cynda Shaw at Zalmona Presbyterian Church. Bob started a career as a heavy equipment operator with Holland Brothers Construction in Decorah and in 1993 for Riley Construction in Ossian where he was still working at the time of his death. Bob and Cynda purchased the Westside Cafe in 2006, he was a very active partner and he looked forward to working the weekends with Cynda.


Bob loved spending time in the outdoors fishing, cutting wood, boating, hunting and taking care of his and his father's Belgian horses. He loved little kids, his dogs Muffin and Tinker and was an avid Green Bay Packers fan. Bob collected model Allis Chalmers. He was known for his great sense of humor.

Survivors include his wife, Cynda of Waukon; his mother, Marcella "Marcie" Opfer of Waukon; 2 step-sons, Keith of Lafayette, IN and Michael (Robin) of Spencer, IA; 3 step-grandchildren; 2 step-great-grandchildren; 3 sisters, Sheryl (John) Prestemon of Waukon, Linda (Jerry) Beck of Madison, IA and Brenda (Ken) Turteltaub of Livermore, CA; and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his father, Edward and 2 step-grandchildren.
