When he was quite young, his family moved to the rural Forest Mills area of Allamakee County where he attended school. Following his schooling he worked for a number of neighboring farmers. On December 3, 1961 Bob married Sharon Steiber at the EUB church in Lansing, IA. They moved to Cedar Rapids where he worked for the city. He drove for several local firms, including Gary Bulman, Kurk Trucking, Caledonia Haulers and Gerry Sommer, as well as a number of other regional carriers. Following his retirement in 2000, he worked as a security guard at Cabela's in Prairie du Chien, WI, and rode with his son Steve, who is also a truck driver.

As an avid outdoorsman, he appreciated days spent fishing on the Mississippi River or squirrel hunting in the northeast Iowa hills.
