Robert pursued a number of special interests during his life. As a young boy, his facination with insects earned him the nickname "Bugs". Later, his interest in electronics lead to a long-time hobby of working with CB radios, both on the air as well as fixing and repairing them. He also had a talent for photography and took a large number of creative and interesting pictures with his camera.

Survivors include a sister, Delores Anne (John) Nolan of Wanganui, New Zealand, 2 nieces and a nephew. He is preceded in death by his parents.
