Richard Willard Sandry was born May 3, 1935, at his parents' home in Center Township, rural Lansing, IA, the son of Willard and Alice (Schmieden) Sandry. He was baptized at East Paint Creek Evangelical Lutheran Church in rural Waterville and confirmed at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Lansing. Richard attended country school in Churchtown and graduated from Waukon High School in 1953. In October of 1955 he joined the Naval Reserve Unit at La Crosse, WI and attended boot camp in Great Lakes, IL. He was then assigned to Attack Squadron 63 based at NAS, Alameda, California where he eventually became rated as a 3rd Class Aviation Electricians Mate. He spent six months aboard the USS Shangri-La (CV-38) aircraft carrier on a Far East tour between 1956 and 1957. During his deployment he visited Pearl Harbor, Japan, the Philippines, Hong Kong, and Kowloon on mainland China. He was very proud of his service and loved to share stories of his time spent overseas in the Navy. After the service Richard moved back to the Lansing area and started farming with his father. On October 11, 1969 he married Dorothy Halvorson at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon. They farmed together with their children near Churchtown where they raised a herd of purebred and high percentage Gelbvieh and Simmental cattle, selling breeding stock and finishing the rest for market. Richard, Dorothy and family also raised hogs, corn, soybeans, oats and hay until his retirement.

Richard was a member of Zion United Church of Christ and the American Legion in Lansing. He enjoyed being with his family and friends, fishing, woodworking, raising and caring for his roses, landscaping, playing the accordion and spending time with his beloved dog. Richard was a loving husband and father and will always be remembered by his family.

Survivors include his wife Dorothy of Lansing; his children: Julie (Adam) Quandahl of Waukon, and Dave of Lansing; and 2 grandchildren: Carli and Zach Quandahl. He is preceded in death by his parents.
