Richard J. Hansmeier, 72, of Waukon, IA, died Thursday, February 19, 2015, at his home in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Sunday, February 22nd at 3:00 PM at Old West Paint Creek Lutheran Church in rural Waukon with Pastor Ken Kimball officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends can call from 2:30 until 3:00 and can greet the family following the service at the church on Sunday. Martin Funeral Home of Waukon is handling arrangements.
Richard James Hansmeier was born September 2, 1942, in Waukon, Iowa, the fourth of five children to Reuben and Gertrude C. (Stock) Hansmeier. He was baptized and confirmed at the Salem Evangelical and Reformed Church in rural Waukon. He attended Ludlow #5 country school through the 8th grade and graduated from Waukon High School in 1960.
On June 29, 1963, he married Patricia Ann Ward at St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon. In March of 1964, they moved to Pat's family farm in Center Township where they lived and raised their family for the next 50 years. Richard was a lifelong farmer, raising livestock, Dairy cattle, and crops. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, cards, sports, guns, coins, and going to auctions. Richard was a long time member of the Old West Paint Creek Lutheran Church where he served as a Luther League sponsor, janitor, and on the church council and cemetery board.
He is survived by his wife Pat of Waukon and four children: Dawn Heimer of La Crescent, MN, and Diane (Greg) Berns, David (Bobbi) Hansmeier, and Daryl Hansmeier, all of Waukon; a brother Robert (Joy) Hansmeier of Waukon; three sisters: Charlotte (Clifton) Christianson and Darlene Johnson, both of Waukon, and Linda (Mike) Miller of Chariton, IA; a brother-in-law Gary (Dolly) Ward of Denver, IA; nine grandchildren: Kate (Mike) Woodward, Douglas (Tiffany) Heimer, Mason (Kaytie) Berns, Daniel Heimer, Mindy (Andy Kelly) Berns, Mitchell Berns, and Tristan, Miles, and Paige Hansmeier; three great-grandchildren: Maddex Woodward, Griffin Heimer, and Marti Woodward; an uncle Robert O. Stock of Waukon; and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; a daughter Beth Ann Hansmeier; and a son-in-law Marty Heimer.
Pallbearers are his eight grandsons: Douglas Heimer, Mason Berns, Daniel Heimer, Mitchell Berns, Tristan and Miles Hansmeier, Michael Woodward, and Andy Kelly.
