Richard Baumgartner

Richard Baumgartner, 62, of Waukon, IA, died Saturday, September 19, 2020, from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident in De Soto, WI. Per Rick's wishes, he was cremated and a private family burial will be held at a later date at Oakland Cemetery in Waukon. Martin-Grau Funeral Home in Waukon is assisting the family. Richard Baumgartner was born July 24, 1958, in Waukon, IA, the son of Robert and Joyce (Moen) Baumgartner. He attended school at the Little Red School (now located at the fairgrounds) as well as in Waukon and Monona, IA. During this time, he milked cows for area farmers. In 1976, Rick left school to join the U.S. Navy and served two years on the USS Bryce Canyon in Hawaii. After being discharged, he went to work for Riehm Construction and Farms. Rick then worked road construction for Carlson's, which then became Knife River, and is now Bruening Rock Products. Most recently, he was working at Gencor in Marquette, IA.

Rick loved fishing, especially at Lake Pepin. He also enjoyed riding his motorcycle, visiting with friends, and listening to Johnny Cash. His grandchildren were very important to him and he always enjoyed spending time with them. "Bark 'em Up" was his motto for having a good time, which he lived up to daily with a smile on his face, a Busch Light in hand, and a contagious laugh. Rick lived a good life and was always willing to help others.

He is survived by his daughter Shelly Baumgartner and her husband Vicente Quiroz of Waukon; his grandchildren Vicente Jr. and Petra; his siblings: Janice (Don Dehning) Cooper, Kay (Steve) Butler, Dennis (Mary) Baumgartner, Darrell (Alice) Baumgartner, Jeannie Miller, Carol Jeide, Neal Baumgartner, Lori (Joe Hare) Brainard, and Susie Rathbun; his girlfriend Olivia Bell and her children and grandchildren; and long time friend Kim Sylvester.

Rick was preceded in death by his parents; one brother John Baumgartner; two sisters-in-law: Janet and Sandy; brother-in-law Glenn Cooper; and a nephew Kevin Cooper.
