Phyllis R. Haler, 80, of Waukon, IA, died Thursday, June 28, 2007 at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Monday, July 2nd at 10:30 am at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Waukon, with Fr. Joseph Schneider officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Waukon. Friends may call from 4:00 to 8:00 pm Sunday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon where there will be a 4:00 pm Scripture Service and a 5:30 pm VFW Auxiliary Memorial Service.

Phyllis Rosella Byrnes Haler was born on October 24, 1926 on her parents farm in Hanover Township, rural Waukon, IA. She was the daughter of Larry and Nora (Zoll) Byrnes. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary's Hanover Catholic Church, attended Hanover #3 rural school and graduated from St. Patrick's High School in Waukon in 1945. While she was in high school, Phyllis worked at the Hall Maternity Hospital in Waukon. After graduation she moved to the Chicago area where she worked as a nanny and then to Dubuque where she spent a couple of years working in the casing department of Dubuque Packing Co. On September 20, 1948 she married George Frank Haler at St. Mary's Hanover Church. Phyllis became a busy mother and homemaker, raising her seven children and tending to their needs.

Phyllis was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and the VFW Auxiliary in Waukon. She centered her life around the activities of her family. For many years she gathered everyone who could come at her home for Sunday dinner. She also enjoyed watching her grandchildren and now her great-grandchildren grow.

Survivors include her children, Don (DiAnne) Haler of Waukon; Mary (Leo) Speltz of Altura, MN, Larry (Linda) Haler of Hinkley, IL, Nora Herr of Waukon, Mike Haler of Glendale, AZ, Patty Haler of Rochester, MN and Jeff (Julie) Haler of Dike, IA; 12 grandchildren; 3 step-grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a brother, Vic Byrnes and a sister, Anita (Charles) Murphy, both of Waukon. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband George, who died in 1991; a granddaughter, Sarah Speltz; 6 brothers, Francis, Garland, Lawrence, Pat, Clem and Mark Byrnes; and 4 sisters, Mary Steinhart, Gladys Quillin, and 2 infant sisters, Donna Mae and Gertrude.

Casketbearers are Eric and Lisa Haler, Rebecca Brennan, Bridget Gibbs, Nathan Speltz, David and Scott Haler, Eva Kohuts, Jennifer Haler, Troy Filyaw, Heather Herr and Hannah Haler.
