Patrick Mahoney

Patrick E. Mahoney, 73, of Waukon, IA, died Friday, May 24, 2019, at Northgate Care Center in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 28th, at 11:00 AM at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon with Fr. Mark Osterhaus officiating. Burial will be at St. John the Baptist - West Ridge Cemetery, rural Waukon. Friends may call from 3:00 PM - 6:00 PM Monday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon, where there will be a 2:30 scripture service.

Patrick Edward Mahoney was born June 5, 1945, in La Crosse, WI, the son of Edward and Regina (Mellick) Mahoney. He was baptized at St. Patrick Catholic Church and confirmed at St. John the Baptist – West Ridge Catholic Church, both in Waukon; in 1963, he graduated from St. Patrick High School in Waukon. From 1965-71, Pat was enlisted in the Army Reserves and served on active duty from May – September in 1965. In November 1966, he married Jane Chihak at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Lourdes, IA. The couple lived in Anamosa, IA, and Pat farmed, did carpentry work, and built houses in Cedar Rapids. In 1976, they returned to Waukon, where they farmed in the West Ridge area. When he wasn't working, Pat liked to coon and squirrel hunt with his brothers. Pat and Jane later divorced. In 2005, Pat was in a tractor related accident near Madison, WI, which resulted in him living in the Northgate apartments. While there, Pat developed some of his most meaningful friendships, particularly with Maggie Gorman, who would check on and take care of him every day.

He is survived by his three sons: Dana (Jen) of Cedar Rapids, IA, Lance (Sophia) of San Diego, CA, and Shay (Stacey) of Caledonia, MN; his grandchildren: Chase, Carson, Payton, William, and Charlie; three brothers: Michael and Lyle (Marilyn), both of Waukon, and John of Minneapolis, MN; and two sisters: Mary Jean (Larry) Svendsen and Bernadine (Tom) Gander, both of Ossian, IA. Pat was preceded in death by his parents.

The Mahoney family would like to especially acknowledge all the work done by Lyle Mahoney, Lou Ann Wikan at Northgate Care Facility, and Maggie Gorman that helped Pat live the way he wanted in the years after his accident.

Honorary casketbearers are Rodney Kelly, Donnie Nierling, Mike, Pat, Dale, and Spike Ryan, Jerry Stolie, and Merlyn Wilken. Casketbearers are Gary Gander, Shane, Matt, Brian, Brad, and Greg Mahoney, and Russ and Mark Svendsen.
