Orville Dean Hesse

Orville D. Hesse, 68, of Waukon, IA, died Tuesday, October 21, 2008, at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Friday, October 24th, at 10:30 AM at Salem United Church of Christ in rural Waukon, with Pastor Judy Scheer officiating. Burial will be held in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 4:00 - 8:00 PM Thursday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.

Orville Dean Hesse was born on February 22, 1940 in Waukon, IA, the son of Paul Albert and Clara Anna (Snitker) Hesse. He was baptized and confirmed at Salem United Church of Christ, where he remained a life-long member, and attended rural Ludlow Township Schools. On June 24, 1961 he married Marjorie Lang. They were later divorced. On March 6, 2002 he married Sandy Leiran. Orville spent most of his working career as a farmer, first along with his parents, and later on his own. He operated a dairy herd and raised hogs and crops. In 1992 he moved to Waukon where he has worked for many years in recycling at the Waukon Redemption Center.

Orville participated in both the Waukon bowling and pool leagues. He was an avid Chicago Cubs fan and enjoyed following NASCAR, especially Tony Stewart. He also enjoyed being with his dogs Angel and Sparky, playing cards, and spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife, Sandy of Waukon; his children, Donna (Larry Engen) Quam of Decorah, Debra (Joe) Kaiser of Rockland, WI, Steve (Anita) Hesse of Decorah, Tammy (Mike) Wirick of St. Louis, MO, Jay Runice of Waukon, Shelle (Al) Fogt of Waukon, and Heather (Scott) VanGorp of Nashua, IA; 17 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; a sister, Ruby Teslow of Decorah; and 2 brothers, Roger (LaVonne) Hesse of Waukon and Ronald (Shirley) Hesse of Postville. He is preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Marian Straate; and his step-mother, Mildred Hesse.

Honorary casketbearers are Dillon and Liz Dietrich, Matt Doubek, Chris Mathis and Morgan Peterson. Casketbearers are Brian Dougherty, Gary Ward, Andy Shogren, Don and John Henningsgaard and Lynn Folsom.
