Orval Teman Tilleraas

Orval T. Tilleraas, 88, of Waukon, IA, died Tuesday, May 12, 2009, at the Good Samaritan Center in Waukon following a brief illness. Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 16th, at 10:30 AM at Waterloo Ridge Lutheran Church in rural Dorchester, IA, with Pastor Allen Hermeier officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 4:00 - 7:00 PM Friday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.
Orval Teman Tilleraas was born on February 1, 1921 on the Tilleraas family farm in Waterloo Township, rural Dorchester, IA, the son of Olaf and Tinka (Goodno) Tilleraas. He was baptized and confirmed at Waterloo Ridge Lutheran Church and attended Waterloo Ridge Elementary School both in rural Dorchester. On March 6, 1941 he married Evelyn Henrietta Lund at the Trinity parsonage in Spring Grove MN. Orval and Evelyn farmed for many years until he retired from farming in 1977. After retiring from farming he went to work for the Spring Grove Bottling Company until he sold the farm and moved to Decorah in April of 1995. He has been a resident at the Good Samaritan Center since November of 2006.
Orval was a life-long member of Waterloo Ridge Lutheran Church, a lifetime member of Valheim #364 Sons of Norway in Spring Grove, a former member of National Farmers Organization and served on the board of directors of Scandinavian Mutual Insurance Company. Orval enjoyed playing cards especially whist, dancing, watching baseball and spending time with his family and friends.
Survivors include his 7 children, Judith (Verdayne) Melbostad of Spring Grove, MN, Jaerdis (Darrell) Bistodeau of Waukon, IA, Terry (Janice L.) Tilleraas of Dodgeville, WI, Jeannine (David) Zimmerman of Waukon, IA, Truman (Janice G.) Tilleraas of Spring Grove, MN, Trygve (Rose) Tilleraas of Decorah, IA and Troy (Niki) Tilleraas of Hastings, MN; 17 grandchildren, Jodeen (Jack) Swinghamer, Robert Melbostad, Steven (Sheila) Melbostad, Jackie (Tim) Fabel, Andrew (Emily) Tilleraas, Jessica (Greg) Phelps, John (Jessica) Zimmerman, Kristina (Ben) Gralund, Kelsey (Matthew) Slay, Ryan Tilleraas, Chad Tilleraas, Jared (Betty) Tilleraas, Emily Tilleraas and fiance J.R. Eugene Taylor, Nicolas Tilleraas, Brianne Tilleraas and fiance Cody Massman, DaKota Tilleraas and Tucker Tilleraas; 17 great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Lee Lund of Stevens Point, WI; and special friends, Lester and Genevieve Bentley of Decorah, IA. He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Evelyn who died in 1980 and a granddaughter Joanna Zimmerman.
Honorary casketbearers are his granddaughters. Casketbearers are his grandsons.
