Nyles E. Herman, 90, of Waukon, IA, died Tuesday, June 23, 2020, at his home in Waukon, surrounded by his family. Due to the COVID- 19 pandemic, PRIVATE FAMILY FUNERAL SERVICES will be held Monday, June 29th, at 11:00 AM at Zalmona Presbyterian Church in rural Waukon with Pastor Tim Rupert and Pastor Tom Buresh officiating. Please join the family Monday at 11:00 AM via live stream on the Martin Funeral Home Facebook page. The family may have a celebration of life at a later date. Burial will be in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, condolences can be sent to Ruby Herman at 603 3rd Avenue Southeast, Waukon, IA, 52172. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon is handling arrangements.


Nyles Elmer Herman was born April 7, 1930, in Waukon, IA, the son of Elmer and Mary (Grotegut) Herman. He was baptized and confirmed at Zalmona Presbyterian Church in rural Waukon. Nyles attended Helming Country School in Union Prairie Township in rural Waukon and graduated from Waukon High School in 1948. On June 1, 1952, he married Ruby Beardmore at Mt. Hope Presbyterian Church in rural New Albin, IA. They farmed together in Union Prairie Township, where they raised livestock and crops. They also owned and operated the Waukon Feed Ranch, a grain elevator, where they sold chemicals, fertilizer, farm supplies, and Purina feed. They retired and moved into Waukon in 1989. Nyles continued to go to the farm and help his sons.


He was a member of Zalmona Presbyterian Church, where he served as a former deacon and trustee. Nyles loved farming, spending time with his family, and attending his grandchildren's activities. He also enjoyed fishing, duck hunting, riding his motorcycle with Ruby around the countryside, and taking several trips to Sturgis, SD. Nyles and Ruby loved to travel throughout the United States along with trips to Germany, Alaska, and Monaco, Europe. They wintered in Texas for 25 years.


Survivors include his wife Ruby of Waukon; his children: Brad (Judy) Herman of Waukon, Kim (Ron) Winters of Waterville, IA, and Brent Herman and Brian (Michelle) Herman, both of Waukon; a daughter-in-law Pam Herman of Lansing, IA; 11 grandchildren: Natalie (Bret) Rasmussen, Chad (Sara) Winters, Angela (Judd) Larson, Kristyna (Devin Kass) Herman, Justyn (Gabrielle Cowie) Herman, Vannessa (Justin Breese) Herman, Felicia (Clinton) Lickteig, Travis Herman, Breanne (Travis) Bernau, Trevor (Kylie) Herman, and Alexa (Kramer) Dixon; 14 great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law Jan Esch of Strawberry Point, IA; and two sisters-in-law: Mae Gustin of Blair, NE, and Jane (Leon) Schoh of Waukon. He is preceded in death by his parents; a brother Ruben (Helen) Herman; two sisters: Marian (Hanley) Jenkins and Vernell Esch; a sister-in-law Helen (Delton) Mohwinkle; and two brothers-in-law: Glen (Rae) Beardmore and Willard Gustin.


Honorary casketbearers are Nyles caregivers. Casketbearers are Travis, Trevor, and Justyn Herman, Chad Winters, Clint Lickteig, Bret Rasmussen, Travis Bernau, Kramer Dixon, and Judd Larson.
