Norris L. Shefelbine, 84, of Waukon, IA, died Sunday, April 17, 2011, at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Friends may call from 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM Thursday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon. There will be no other services. Burial will be at the Dorchester Methodist Cemetery at a later date.
Norris Laverne Shefelbine was born on October 5, 1926, in Dorchester, IA, the son of Albert and Clara (Goodno) Shefelbine. He grew up in the Dorchester area and attended its local school. At the age of 18 he entered military service and was stationed in the Hawaiian Islands and Maryland. He attained the rank of Master Sergeant and taught and trained new army personnel. He married Charlotte Opsal of Mabel, MN, they had one child, Nancy, and were divorced 32 years later. After the Military he farmed near Hanover for a short time, and then moved to Cedar Rapids where he worked for Collins Radio for 22 years. He moved back to Allamakee County where he worked at Makee Manor as a nurse's aide for 12 years. Norris also worked in Ottumwa, IA, for the Wapello County Home for 6 years. Norris loved old time music and dancing. Norris spent a lot of his time doing volunteer work for the Veterans. For this he received several certificates, most notably Gov. Terry Branstad presented him with the Volunteer of the Year award.
Survivors include one daughter, Nancy (Dale) Baines, of Hills, IA.; two granddaughters, Kerry O'Brine of Iowa City, IA, and Heidi Pyos of Colorado Springs, CO; a step grandson, Brian Laschke; and eight great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents and all seven of his siblings, James, Alfred, Gades, Malcom and Silas Shefelbine, Julia Lundering and Mary Shefelbine.
