Norman (Bud) H. Wheeler, 85, of Decorah, IA, died Monday, June 1, 2009, at his home in Decorah. Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 4th, at 11:00 AM at Salem United Church of Christ in rural Waukon, IA, with Rev. Judy Scheer officiating. Inurnment will take place at a later date in Salem Cemetery. Friends may call from 4:00 - 8:00 PM Wednesday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.
Norman Harley Wheeler was born on September 16, 1923 in Tintah, MN, the son of Harley Jacob and Mary Alice (Loop) Wheeler. He was baptized and confirmed at Tintah Congregational Church in Tintah. Norman attended country school in rural Traverses County, MN and graduated from Tintah High School. He farmed with his father for many years. On November 20, 1954 he married Jeanne Lorraine Dotseth at the Messiah Lutheran Church in Minneapolis, MN. They moved to rural Frankville, IA, in 1959 where they farmed until 1988. He also sold Nature's Plant Food for eight years. Norman and Jeanne moved to Decorah in 2004. He was a member of Salem United Church of Christ where, he served as an elder, usher and on the Consistory Board. Norman was also a member of National Farmers Organization. He enjoyed working on farm machinery, carpentry work on the farm, fixing up used furniture, following his children's activities, eating out and visiting with family and friends.
Survivors include his wife, Jeanne Wheeler of Decorah, IA; his 5 children, David (Penny) Wheeler of Postville, IA, Norma Cornish of Webster City, IA, Judy (Tony) Tague of Castalia, IA, Jeff Wheeler Farmersburg, IA and Rodney (Traci) Wheeler of Ridgeway, IA; 4 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren and 4 step-grandchildren; a sister, Opal (Milton) Larson of Wheaton, MN and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; a granddaughter, Jamie Wheeler; a sister, Margie and a brother-in-law, Thomas Broesder.
Honorary casketbearers are Lester Engen, Merlin and Robert Hansmeier, Emmett Kruger, Ron Ludeking, Calvin Snitker, Howard Snitker and Dawn Tollackson. Casketbearers are Donnie Hanson, David Sorum, Kevin Helgerson, Greg Snitker, Dean Eickelberg and Jennifer King.
