Norman J. Rema, 85, of Waterville, IA, died Thursday, September 2, 2010, at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon, IA. Funeral services will be held Monday, September 6th, at 11:00 AM at Old East Paint Creek Lutheran Church in Waterville, with Pastor Ken Kimball officiating. Burial with military graveside rites will be held in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 3:00 - 7:00 PM Sunday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon. Memorials maybe made to Old East Paint Creek Lutheran Church or Waukon VFW post 4117.

Norman James Rema was born June 7, 1925 on the rural Waterville, IA farm of his parents, John T. Sr. and Clara S. (Kolsrud) Rema. He was baptized and confirmed at Old East Paint Creek Lutheran Church and attended Elon country school rural Waterville. Norman served in the U.S. Army from 1945 to 1947 serving some of his time in Germany. Norman began farming, initially with his parents and other relatives. Norman and his twin brother John, operated a saw mill for many years along with the farming operation. On December 3, 1949 he married Ione Christianson at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. In 1955 Norman and Ione moved to the home farm in Center Township where they operated a dairy farm and raised crops, hogs and chickens.

Norman was a life-long member of Old East Paint Creek Lutheran Church where served on the church council and as an usher. He loved music and played the guitar with his brother John and some other local musicians in a band they called the "Offbeats". They performed at Rainbow Gardens, community events at the Waterville Fire Station and even private residences when they could get a group of friends together. On Sunday afternoons he and his family would go to the local airports where they looked at the planes. Norman also enjoyed pitching horse shoes in Elon, fishing, coon hunting, snowmobiling, picnics under the maple tree, attending local air shows and parades.

Survivors include his wife, Ione of Waterville; his children, Linda (Ray) Svendson of Des Moines, IA, James Rema of La Crescent, MN and Cathy Rema of Waterville; 2 grandchildren, Chad (fiancé Kim Anderson) Svendson and Kara (Brandon) Lindsey; 4 great-grandchildren, Jace, Bain and Mali Svendson and Sven Lindsey; 2 sisters, Emeline Jeglum of Waukon and Florence (Milton) Lind of Phoenix, AZ. He is preceded in death by his parents; his twin brother, John, Jr. and a brother-in-law, James Jeglum.


Honorary casketbearers are Tom Lind, Kara and Sven Lindsey, Chad, Jace, Bain and Mali Svendson and Boyd Jeglum. Casketbearers are Richard, Rodney, Randy and Russell Rema, Ron Winters and Brian Jeglum.
