Nora M. Stamper, 92, of Waukon, IA, died Saturday, March 22, 2014, at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 25th, at 11:00 AM at St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon, with Rev. Lynn G. Groe officiating. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Friends may call from 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM Monday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.
Nora Margaret Stamper was born on June 21, 1921 in Ossian, IA, the daughter of Edward Ludvig and Tomina Johanna (Assnes) Grimstad. She was baptized in Ossian and confirmed at Old East Paint Creek Lutheran Church in rural Waterville, IA. Nora attended schools in Ossian, Marquette, and McGregor. On April 3, 1941 she married Victor Stamper in Clintwood, West Virginia. During the 1940s and early 1950s she lived in Guttenberg, IA, and after that in Harpers Ferry and Waterville, IA, before moving to Waukon, IA in 1961. During her working career Nora was a homemaker, waitress, and a caregiver for people in their homes. She also worked at Northern Engraving and was a nurse's aide at Northgate Care Center in Waukon for 14 years.
Nora was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and Sarah Circle as well as the American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed playing cards, scrabble, and bingo with her family and friends. She was a loyal Chicago Cubs and Iowa Hawkeyes fan and throughout her life was very close to her pet dogs, especially Barney. An avid traveler, Nora enjoyed visits to California, Washington, and Kentucky, and being proud of her Norwegian heritage, particularly enjoyed several visits to Norway. She loved spending time with her family and friends and was known for her good sense of humor.
Survivors include 3 children: LaJune (Rich) Cota and Edward (Karen) Stamper, both of Waukon, and Rhonda Lee (Randy) Rema of Postville, IA; a daughter-in-law Sue Stamper of Waukon; 14 grandchildren: Ben Stamper, Brian Cota, James Cota, Travis Hagensick, Corey Hagensick, Trace Stamper, Chad Stamper, Dawn Farnan, Kim Cota, Peggy Wickenkamp, Callie Hrubes, Chelsey Stamper, Audrea Peterson, and Dustin Folsom; and 24 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband Victor who died in 1992; her son Michael who died in 2011; 3 brothers: Elmer, Harold, and Norman Grimstad; and 7 sisters: Grace Reno, Bernice Williams, Freda Grimstad, Clara Yohe, Edna Koranda, Blanche Brookins, and Bernadine Furry.
Her grandchildren will serve as casketbearers.
