Mildred Engrav Snitker Carroll, 99, of Waukon, IA, formerly of Marion, IA, died Wednesday, February 28, 2007 at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Monday, March 5th at 11:00 am at St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon, with Rev. Lynn G. Groe officiating. Burial will be in Gethsemane Cemetery, Lansing, IA. Friends may call from 3:00 to 6:00 pm Sunday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.
Mildred Eleanor Engrav Snitker Carroll was born on August 31, 1907 in Center Township, rural Lansing, IA. She was the daughter of John Louis and Mathilda (Torgeson) Dahly. Mildred was baptized and confirmed at Old East Paint Creek Lutheran Church and attended the rural "Dalby" School. Following her schooling she worked as a telephone operator in Minneapolis. On April 6, 1932 she married Walter Engrav. They lived in Preston, MN where Mildred worked as a seamstress. Walter died in 1938. On October 24, 1945 she married Arthur Snitker. Mildred and Art farmed together near Granger, MN until his death in 1946. She stayed on the farm until 1950 when on August 26 she married Clarence Carroll. Mildred and Clarence lived in Marion, IA where she worked at Collins Radio until retiring in the early 1970s and moving back to Waukon.
Mildred was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and its Ladies Circle. She enjoyed playing cards, working crossword puzzles, shopping and traveling. She also loved to spend time with her family. Mildred had a sharp mind, quick wit and true zest for life right up until her death. She will be greatly missed by all those whose lives she touched.
Survivors include 5 sons, Roger Engrav of St. Louis, MO, Frank (Carolyn) Engrav of Cedar Rapids, IA, Richard (Edna) Engrav of Copperas Cove, TX, Walter (Betty) Engrav of Pea Ridge, AR and Curtis Snitker of Detroit, MI; 2 stepsons, Marvin Snitker of Wisconsin and Eugene Snitker of Texas; 19 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; 8 great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Bernice Coorough of Prairie du Chien, WI. She is preceded in death by her parents; her three husbands; an infant son Robert Engrav; 2 step-children, Rita and Roger Snitker; 2 brothers, Carl and Lester Dahly; 5 sisters, Helen Hendel, Hazel Dahl, Luella A'Hearn, Myrtle Hastings and Elsie Erickson; and a great-grandson, Kevin Bulman.
Casketbearers are Steve, Greg and Dave Engrav, Dean Snitker, Roger May and John Erickson.
