Merle E. Cook, 85, of Waukon, IA, formerly of Postville, IA, died Saturday, November 26, 2011, at Northgate Care Center in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, November 30th, at 11:00 AM at Frankville Presbyterian Church in Frankville, IA, with Pastor Paul Snyder officiating. Burial will be at Frankville Cemetery, in Frankville. Friends may call from 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM Tuesday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.
Merle Edwin Cook was born October 9, 1926 on his parents farm in Moneek rural Frankville, IA, the son of Perlie and Lydia (Linderbaum) Cook. He attended elementary school in Moneek, high school in Frankville and graduated from Postville High School. Merle stayed in the Moneek area until 1940. On June 24, 1950 he married Ardyth Jeanne Wagner at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Postville. They farmed together for several years west of Frankville on the Hoth farm, before moving to a farm east of Frankville where they farmed for many years. Merle and Ardyth later divorced. In 1972 he went to work for the Postville Feed Mill until the feed mill closed. He then went to work at Rossville Implement and Salvage in Rossville, IA, and Hall Robert's Son in Postville, until he retired. Merle also did fencing for area farmers.
He was a member of Frankville Presbyterian Church, the Frankville Fire Department, where he served as fire chief for six years and served as a Frankville Trustee. He enjoyed roller skating, ice skating, dancing, especially waltzing, hunting, fishing, boating on the Mississippi River, working jigsaw puzzles and crossword puzzles, playing cards and monopoly. He also liked to barbeque hogs for different events. When he was younger he played the banjo. Merle was very skilled at carpentry work and was known to many as an all-around handyman.
Survivors include his children, Sherry Knudtson of Waukon, Dennis (Corinne) Cook of Frankville, and Barbara (Jay Wenthold) Cook of Frankville; 7 grandchildren, Kirby (Matt) Jones, Kasey (Brock Iverson) Knudtson, Kelly Cook, Toni (Kenny) Pearson, Kendra Cook, Daniel (Heidi Oelmann) Cook and Kassidy Cook; 7 great-grandchildren, Jacob and Colin Jones, Paige Cook, Payton Waters, Devon and Kennedee Pearson and Connor Stilwell; and a brother LaVerne (Marion) Cook of Decorah, IA. He is preceded in death by his parents; a son-in-law, Clifford Knudtson; a brother, Duane Cook and his wife Marilyn; his grandparents, William and Emma Cook and Charles and Alma Linderbaum.
Casketbearers are Danny Cook, Kassidy Cook, Kenny Pearson, Brock Iverson, Matt Jones and Jay Wenthold.
