Melvin A. Anderson, 99, of Waukon, IA, died Thursday, March 10, 2011, at Northgate Care Center in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Monday, March 14th, at 11:00 AM at St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon, with Rev. Lynn G. Groe officiating. Burial will be at West Paint Creek Synod Cemetery, rural Waukon. Friends may call from 3:00 PM - 7:00 PM Sunday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.

Melvin Amandus Anderson was born on May 16, 1911 to Olaf and Hilda (Sorum) Anderson on their farm near Elon. He was baptized and confirmed at West Paint Creek Synod Church, and attended the Bakkum rural school. Melvin had his own trucking business and also a cream route while farming at home. On November 12, 1936 he married Emma Geneva Engrav at the Highland Prairie Lutheran Church, Rushford, MN. They farmed in Paint Creek Township where they raised beef and dairy cattle, hogs, chickens, sheep and grain. In 1978 they retired to Waukon, but continued to spend time on the farm on Village Creek and they built bird houses to keep busy. Melvin was an avid reader and a passionate hunter. He enjoyed coon and fox hunting as well as turkey and deer hunting. He continued turkey and deer hunting up to the age of 98. He will be remembered for his vivid story telling.

Survivors include 2 children, Margaret (Harlan) Hermeier of Waukon, IA, Melvin D. (Lynne) Anderson of Waverly, IA; 5 grandchildren, Lee (Dannette) Hermeier, Lori (Arnie) Crum, Lisa Hermeier, Brian Anderson and Chris (Shelley) Anderson; and 9 great-grandchildren, Michael Schulte, Ryan and Eric Crum, Mason, Ella and Walker Hermeier, Annabel Turnbull, Madilynne and Lucy Anderson. He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Emma who died in 2007; a grandson, Steven Paul Hermeier; a brother, Rudolph Anderson; 2 sisters, Alma Sorenson and Judith Engrav.

Honorary casketbearers are Rudolf 'Bud' Anderson, Bob Lier, Eugene Engrav, Arnie Crum, Brock Schmidt, Lucy and Madilynne Anderson, Eric Crum, Ella, Mason, Walker Hermeier and Annabell Turnbell. Casketbearers are Bob Brandt, Jim Schmidt, Lisa and Lee Hermeier, Lori and Ryan Crum, Michael Schulte, Brian and Chris Anderson.
