Maxine Campbell, 93, of Clive, IA, formerly of Waukon, IA, died Tuesday, October 11, 2022, at Kavanagh House in Des Moines, IA. Memorial services will be held Tuesday, October 18th, at 10:30 AM at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon with Fr. John Moser officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Waukon. Friends may greet the family from 9:30 AM until time of services at the church on Tuesday. Martin - Grau Funeral Home in Waukon is handling the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the American Cancer Society, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), and St. Jude's Hospital.
Madonna Maxine Campbell was born on June 4, 1929, in Waukon, IA, the daughter of John and Mabel (Dougherty) Huffman. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Pius Catholic Church at Cherry Mound in rural Harpers Ferry. Maxine attended elementary school in Rossville and graduated from Waukon High School in 1946.
On August 3, 1957, she was united in marriage to James Robert Campbell at St. Pius Catholic Church at Cherry Mound. They were blessed with six children: Jay, Brad (Mary), Kent, Kristen (Jeffrey) Nichols, Eric (Valerie), and Dana (Brian) Ardary.
Between her junior and senior high school years, she took a summer job at the Lansing Button Factory. After graduating from high school, Maxine was employed with Northwestern Bell Telephone Company in Waukon and Waterloo for 14 years. After her children were in school, she worked at Development Disabilities for three years and as a part time secretary at St. Patrick Catholic School for a short period of time. To receive full time employment, Maxine went to work for the Waukon Medical Clinic from 1980 until her retirement.
She was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, a long-time member of the Hospital Auxiliary, Kateri Tekakwitha Study Club, and Iowans for Life. Maxine's interests were reading, sewing, dancing, and working crossword puzzles. She and Jim enjoyed several trips to parts of Europe and also a trip to Japan and Hawaii. Maxine especially enjoyed visits from her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband James; parents John and Mabel Huffman and parents-in-law Leonard and Hazel Campbell; five brothers: LeRoy, Creighton, Cletus, Raymond, and Curtis Huffman; two sisters: Alice (John) Eschweiler and Lucille (Ralph) Hanson; 13 brothers-in-law: William, Michael, John, Mark, Charles "Danny", and Rev. Fr. Thomas Campbell, Ralph Hanson, John Eschweiler, Dale Goltz, Michael Burke, Milton Mohwinkle, Emmett Magner, and Tony Corneliuson; 11 sisters-in-law: Raphaella, Ann, Rosemary, and Jeneen Huffman, Mary "Sis" Goltz, Hazel Burke, Katherine Mohwinkle, Margaret Corneliuson, Esther Campbell, Helen (John) Campbell, and Frances (Michael) Campbell; five nephews: John, Tom, Mark, Jim, and Mike Huffman; and two nieces: Lori Huffman and Margaret Recker. Maxine is survived by her six children; four sisters-in-law: Coila Huffman, Barbara Magner, Sharon Campbell, and Arlene Rooney; a brother-in-law Paul "Manny" Campbell; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Her sons will serve as urnbearers.
