Maxine M. Baxter, 86, of Waukon, IA, died Wednesday, September 21, 2011, at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Monday, September 26th, at 11:00 AM at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon, IA, with Fr. Joseph Schneider officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Waukon. Friends may call from 3:00 PM - 6:00 PM Sunday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon, where there will be a 3:00 PM scripture service and a 5:00 PM VFW Auxiliary memorial service.


Maxine Mary Bresnahan Baxter was born on February 17, 1925 on the family farm in the Silver Creek area of rural Waukon, IA. Her parents were Frank and Margaret (O'Brien) Bresnahan. She got her education at the rural Makee School and St. Patrick High School in Waukon. Following school she worked at various jobs around Waukon. On August 2, 1948 Maxine married Jack Baxter. The couple moved to Calmar, IA for a short time and then to Ft. Atkinson, IA, where Jack ran a creamery and Maxine was a busy mother and homemaker. Jack was killed and Maxine severely injured in a tragic car accident in 1958. Following a lengthy recovery, Maxine moved to Waukon in 1959 and continued raising her family. Later, she worked for a number of years at Elliott's Jewelry and the Iowa Liquor Stores before retiring in 1987.

Maxine was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church Parish and the American Legion and VFW Auxiliary's in Waukon. She enjoyed playing cards, listening and dancing to music, and doing embroidery work.

Survivors include her children, Pat (Lynn) Moody of Pocahontas, IA, Donna Pattee of Independence, IA, and Don (Cathy) Baxter of Waukon; 7 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; a sister, Geraldine Peyton of Waukon; and a brother, Bernard (Idella) Bresnahan of Waukon. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jack; a son, Mike; a son-in-law, Bob Pattee; and a brother, Harold.

Casketbearers are Terri Samuelson, Corey Moody, Molly Ackerson, Tami Hoffman, Kristi Price, Nic Ryan, and Brea Baxter. Honorary casketbearers are Maxine's great-grandchildren and her grandchildren's Spouses.
