Maurice Hart was born on August 21, 1935 in Waukon, IA, the son of William Sherman and LaVina (Callahan) Hart. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, where he remained a life-long member. Maury graduated from St. Patrick's High School in 1953 and later from the University of Iowa. During high school and over the summers during college, he worked at Peterson Hardware in Waukon. In 1965 Maury graduated from Creighton University Law School in Omaha, NE, where he was a member of the law fraternity. He returned to Waukon where he joined a law practice with his father, Sherman, his brother, William and his uncle, James. He started his own firm in 1979 and was still very active at the time of his illness. In addition to his private practice, he formerly served as city attorney for Lansing and Harpers Ferry and as legal council for McGregor Municipal Utilities. Along with being an attorney, Maury operated farms in the Waukon and Harpers Ferry area where he has raised cattle for many years. Maury loved his farming operations, taking excellent care of his livestock and making special efforts to be a good steward of the land. On September 9, 1961 he married Colleen Esther Mathis at St. Joseph's Paint Rock Catholic Church in Harpers Ferry. Colleen died in 1990. In 1999 he married Angie Schulte, they later amicably divorced but remained dedicated friends.

Maury was a member of Knights of Columbus Council 1570, the Iowa and Nebraska State Bar Associations and the Allamakee County Bar Association. In his younger days he traveled with his dad and spent time at the Mississippi River fishing and skiing. He enjoyed hunting, keeping up with current affairs, especially in politics and science, and was an avid reader and WWII history buff. He enjoyed playing pool for numerous teams in various area towns throughout the years. Special times with his family were also very important to him.

Survivors include his six children, Mike (Louann) Hart of Des Moines, IA, Cynthia (Rusty) Berger of Waukon, Elaine (Larry) Thies of Sussex, WI, Thomas (Tracy) Hart of Cresco, IA, Patrick (Nancy) Hart of Waukon and Vicki Hart of Rockford, IL; 8 grandchildren, Leah Casanave, Candace, Carissa, Cassandra and Ross Berger, Liza Thies, Dylan Hart and Sean Hart; a sister, Suzanne Hart (Thomas) O'Regan of Neenah, WI; and a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Hart of Waukon.
