Mathew Armstrong Ferguson

Mathew A. Ferguson, 90, of Littleton, CO, formerly of Salt Lake City and Roosevelt, Utah died Thursday, January 6, 2011, of natural cause in Littleton. Funeral services will be held Sunday, January 23rd, at 1:30 PM at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon, IA. Burial with military graveside rites will be at Oakland Cemetery, Waukon.

Mathew Armstrong Ferguson was born on December 1, 1920 in Salt Lake City, Utah the son of Matthew Armstrong and Lottie (Matthews) Ferguson. He graduated from East High School in Salt Lake City and joined the Navy in February, 1941, where he flew PBYs and PBY-3As. After WWII ended, Matt worked as a flight instructor in the Salt Lake area. He married Virginia Ruth Martin of Waukon, Iowa on August 15, 1946. He joined Challenger Airlines in 1948 which later merged with Arizona Airways and Monarch Airlines to form Frontier Airlines. There he was a pilot in command of scheduled passenger air flights; he flew DC3's, Convair 240's and 580's and Boeing 727's then mostly 737 jet passenger airliners.


Matt was an avid golfer and won the men's club championship and set the course record of 65 at Willow Creek Country Club in Salt Lake City. Matt's hobby was making and repairing golf clubs and he also enjoyed fishing. In 1980, after a distinguished 33 year career as a pilot, Matt & Virginia moved to a ranch near Roosevelt, Utah where they both enjoyed golfing. In 2000, they moved to Littleton, CO to be closer to family.


Matt is survived by two sons, Bruce (Wife Donna and their two daughters Adrienne and Natalie) of Highlands Ranch, CO and Brian (Wife Barbara) of Mountain View, CA and nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Virginia who died in 2003; a sister, Janet Ferguson, and a brother, Keith Ferguson.
