Mary Ann Kugel, 81, of Waukon, IA, died Friday, March 21, 2014, at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 26th, at 11:00 AM at First Baptist Church in Waukon, with Rev. Duane Smith officiating. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Friends may call from 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM Tuesday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.
Mary Ann Kugel was born on August 30, 1932 in Havelock, NE, the daughter of Joe and Mary Anna (Saueressig) Muchow. At an early age she moved with her family to the Postville/Castalia, IA area where she graduated the 8th grade at Bloomhagen Country School. She spent some of her youth working on farms baling hay, threshing oats, shocking corn, and milking cows by hand. She also helped her dad run a milk route. She lived in Des Moines for 2 years and returned home at age 21. She met Roger Willard Kugel at a skating rink in Ossian, IA and after a year and a half courtship; they were married on April 5, 1953 at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon, IA. Mary and Roger lived on several farms in Allamakee County. She was a busy farmwife and mother of 7 and also raised a large garden of flowers and vegetables. In 1974 they moved to Waukon where Mary worked at Northern Engraving for 10 ½ years. She also worked at Hardee's for 20 ½ years running the breakfast counter and had a reputation of making wonderful biscuits.
Mary was a member of First Baptist Church in Waukon. She enjoyed gardening, handiwork and crafts, and did a lot of crocheting. Together with Roger she liked to go fishing, dancing, mushroom hunting, and roller skating. Throughout her life she enjoyed the company of many different pets and animals.
Survivors include her 7 children: Susan (Donald) Stuckwisch of Cedar Rapids, IA, Sandra (Keith) Schuler of Johnston, IA, Louis (Maybelene) Kugel of Palm Bay, FL, Sally Muller of Randalia, IA, Sharon (David) Zimmerman of Towanda, KS, Selma (Dwayne) White of Mt. Hope, WI, and Larry Kugel of Prairie du Chien, WI; 21 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; a sister Alice May Kimber of Canton, MN; and 2 brothers: Donnie (Linda) Muchow of Postville, IA and Joe Muchow Jr. of Ravensdale, WA. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband Roger, who died in 2005; a daughter-in-law Barbara; a sister Norma Jean Mellick; a sister-in-law; and a brother-in-law.
Mary's great-grandchildren will serve as honorary casketbearers and her grandchildren will be casketbearers.
