Mary Lou Jeide Halvorson was born September 16, 1945 in Waukon, IA, the daughter of Elmer Simon and Alma Amelia (Krumme) Jeide. She was baptized and confirmed at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon, where she remained a life-long member, and graduated from Waukon High School in 1963. Following school, Mary Lou worked as a waitress at the Cliff House Restaurant in Decorah. Later she worked as a secretary at Farm Bureau Insurance in Waukon and Lloyd Schroeder Insurance in Postville. On May 22, 1971 she married Herbert Edward Halvorson Jr. at Zion UCC. After marriage she spent a few years as a busy mother and homemaker while her children were young. Mary Lou was an active volunteer at many Veterans Memorial Hospital projects and functions. She was a staunch supporter and participant in Relay For Life events sponsored by the American Cancer Society. She enjoyed going to flea markets, garage sales and swap meets and was a avid sports fan, following stock car races, the Iowa Hawkeyes, and the Green Bay Packers. She liked going for walks and prefered staying active, but when she couldn't be on the go, she enjoyed working crossword and Suduko puzzle books and cooking. Many of her favorite times were spent following the activities of her children and grandchildren.
