Mary H. Duffy, 86, of Waukon, IA, died Wednesday, March 16, 2011, at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 19th, at 10:30 AM at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon, with Fr. Joseph Schneider officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Waukon. Friends may call from 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM Friday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon where there will be a 4:00 pm prayer service.
Mary Helen Duffy was born August 14, 1924 in Oelwein, IA, the daughter of Edward and Mary (Hagan) O'Brien. She graduated from Oelwein High School in 1942 and attended a nursing school in Oak Park, IL. On October 14, 1950 she married Norbert Duffy at Scared Heart Catholic Church in Oelwein. They moved to Charles City, IA, where she worked as a nurse at the Charles City Hospital. Mary and Norbert moved to Waukon in 1963. She went to work at the Good Samaritan Center in Waukon where she was the director of nursing until she retired in 1983.
Mary was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church. She and Norbert enjoyed traveling the United States to see their children and to Ireland and England. They also spent their winters in Arizona. Mary enjoyed knitting, crocheting, needle work, quilting, sewing clothing for her children and making wedding dresses for her daughters and granddaughter Jessica.
Survivors include her husband, Norbert "Bud' Duffy of Waukon; her children, Bert (Jenny Ehrnst) Duffy of Minneapolis, MN, Helen (Bill Charneau) Duffy of Oakland, CA, Greg (Val) Duffy of Boise, ID, Karen (Tom) Regan of Waukon, Dan (Suzy) Duffy of Davis, CA and Tom (Gena) Duffy of Fuquay Varina, NC; 13 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents; 4 brothers, Edward, Miles, Richard and Daniel O'Brien and a sister-in-law, Cora O'Brien.
Honorary casketbearers are Jessica Keenan, Claire Boyle, Lisa, Brien, Irene, Elizabeth, Jade, Cedric, Tobias and Veda Duffy, Good Samaritan Center Employees and Ruth Lau. Casketbearers are Jeremiah, Abraham and Noah Regan, Jerry Keenan, Travis Boyle and Mike O'Brien.
