Mary "Susie" E. Cowell, 73, of Waukon, IA, formerly of Billings, MT, died Wednesday, May 22, 2013, at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon is in charge of arrangements.
Mary "Susie" Elizabeth Cowell was born May 16, 1940, in Huntley, MT, the daughter of Dave and Amy (Nagel) Wittman. She attended Huntley Project High School. She married Duane Cowell in Cody, WY, and the couple made their home in Billings, MT; they later divorced. Susie was a bookkeeper for the Black Angus restaurant in Billings, and was also an owner and manager of an apartment building. In August 2011, she and her partner Richard Bender moved to Waukon, IA.
Susie enjoyed gardening, and was known for her immaculate flower and vegetable gardens. She liked fishing, baking, watching the cooking channel, canning, and doing craft work such as sewing and making blankets. Going with her sister Elsie to garage sales to look for quilting materials, and making yearly trips from Montana to Waukon to see her son Dave were special times for Susie.
Susie is survived by her son Dave (Bobbie) Cowell of Waukon; her partner of 30 years Richard Bender of Waukon; two grandchildren: Nicole and Daniel Cowell of Waukon; brother David (June) Wittman of Billings, MT; three sisters: Elsie Albee of Glendale, AZ, Hannah (Eugene) Gentry of Phoenix, AZ, and Lilly (Jerry Hinz) Bender of Renton, WA; 29 nieces and nephews; and Rambo the dog.
She was preceded in death by her parents; 4 brothers: William, Oscar, Fredrick, and James Wittman; sister Katherine Frickey; and nephew Duane Albee.
