Marvin Charles Ball

February 7, 1921 — September 5, 2007

Marvin C. Ball, 86, of Waterville, IA, died Wednesday, September 5, 2007 at Great River Care Center in McGregor, IA. Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 8th at 11:00 am at St. Pius at Cherry Mound Catholic Church in rural Harpers Ferry, IA, with Fr. Louis Trzil officiating. Burial with military graveside rites will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Monona, IA. Friends may call from 4:00 to 8:00 pm Friday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon, IA, where there will be 4:00 pm scripture service.

Marvin was born on February 7, 1921 near Guttenberg, IA the son of Lee Charles and Irene Charlotte (Fascher) Ball. He spent his youth on a farm Northwest of Luana, IA, where he attended country school near his home. He served in the US Army from 1942 to 1945 in WWII and in India. On January 5th, 1943 he married Lillian Christian Mitchell in Oklahoma and raised six children. After his honorable discharge from the US Army the couple farmed on the "home place" near Luana and then near Lansing, IA, in LaFayette Township. In 1974 Marvin retired from farming, the couple then moved to Waterville where he remained a farmer at heart and enjoyed tinkering with and using his Ford tractor he purchased in 1951. Marvin was a member of St. Pius at Cherry Mound Catholic Church and also the Lansing VFW. He enjoyed gardening, woodworking and he made several birdhouses which he shared with family and friends.

He is survived by 3 daughters, Donna Kinley of Marquette, IA, Mary Platten of Cedar Rapids, IA and Julie (John) Scott of McGregor, IA; 14 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; 3 sisters, Elaine Wilkins of Monona, IA, Gertrude (Norman) Schultz of Castalia, IA and Sharon (James) Schultz of Oregon, IL; a brother-in-law, Ralph Hornberger of Minnesota; and many nieces and nephews.


He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Lillian; a son, Marvin Dean Ball; 2 daughters, Shirley Viola and Diane Helena Ball; a sister, Vernelle Hornberger; son-in-law, Donald Kinley; and a brother-in-law, Keith Wilkins.


Honorary Casketbearers were Marvin's grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Casketbearers were John Scott, John Kinley, James Springsteen, Mark Baskfiled, Bob Schlitter and Kristi Rickard.
